Nolte Wins ASCE Award for 30th Street Transmission Undergrounding

The 30th Street 20a Transmission Undergrounding project has won the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Diego Section Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Award for energy facilities.

The 30th Street 20a Transmission Undergrounding project provided a safer, more reliable energy source for the people of San Diego. The largest span of utility undergrounding in the history of San Diego, the project entailed converting a 20,304 foot-long 138kV electric transmission line from overhead to underground. The project also represents the highest voltage transmission (138kV) ever converted in San Diego.

The award was presented to Nolte, project surveyor and engineer; San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), electrical engineer, construction administrator and transmission line owner; and the City of San Diego, project owner, at the ASCE Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 16. The ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Award recognizes projects that demonstrate the greatest engineering skills and represent the greatest contribution to civil engineering progress and mankind.

Along with Nolte, SDG&E and the City of San Diego, the project team included the general contractor, ARB, Inc. and the utility underground locators and pothole contractor, Airx Utility Surveyors, Inc.
