Watt Avenue carries in excess of 100,000 vehicles per day and had become one of the most highly traveled roadways in Sacramento County. The County retained Nolte to implement a comprehensive community involvement program and to design a solution. The project included road widenings over three bridges, as well as the associated widenings of on- and off-ramps. The purpose of the project was to improve mobility and make the area safer and more aesthetically pleasing for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and area residents. The project added one travel lane in each direction, and provided auxiliary merge lanes (a much needed safety improvement). It improved bicycle/pedestrian facilities and enhanced aesthetics through architectural treatments of the bridge structures, landscaping, and noise barriers. The project has won numerous awards. It was named Project of the Year by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments and was awarded an Excellence in Transportation Award from Caltrans. It won a 'Tranny' award from the California Transportation Foundation and, most recently, was awarded the 2003 Project of the Year by the Sacramento Chapter of the APWA.

Capitol Area East End Complex
This design/build project is the largest civic building project in California's history and will consolidate the operations of three major state departments. At buildout, the 1.5 million square foot campus will include a five-building office complex, retail, police station, auditorium, child care center, and a 750-car parking structure. Nolte provided civil engineering, site utilities, and street utility plans including grading and frontage improvements for a 460,000 square foot portion of the overall project. We also assisted in the team preparation of the Green Building Council's LEED application. Nolte provided information on Site, Sustainable Site, and areas of the Materials and Resources sections. The project was the 1st project to be LEED certified in 2003 and the largest Gold-rated project to date. The project also won California's Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for providing exemplary building projects that showcase green construction practices. The project was also named as one of California Construction Link's Best of California Projects of 2002.

Stevens Canyon Road Project
Stevens Canyon Road is a narrow, two-lane rural roadway. It is also the primary access for residents in the area, serves as a commuter route, and is used by Monte Vista School District buses. Because a portion of the roadway experienced serious flooding nearly every winter with the roadway closed for several weeks at a time, it had become a major problem. The Nolte design team came up with a phased approach that protects the roadway from all but the worst winter storms. The solution included raising the roadway elevation along its existing alignment and right of way and maintaining the creek bed elevation within a defined range. The project was awarded the Project of the Year Award by the South Bay Area chapter of the American Public Works Association in 2002.
