The revitalization of this downtown streetscape not only earned an American Public Works Association Award and Governor's Award for Downtown Excellence from the Colorado Community Revitalization Association, more importantly it sparked the passion of the community. By combining both public and private funding sources, this project served as a catalyst for further improvements to the Manitou Springs downtown business corridor. Today, the visual pollution that previously marred the project area has been eradicated. Roads, buildings, and walkways have been repaired, unsightly utility lines are now buried, and a central lane aids traffic flow. Revitalization efforts are continuing as widespread community support is returning the once declining city of Manitou Springs to its historic place as a tourism destination.

North Line Platforms Retrofit
This project won a Merit Award in CELSOC's 2004 Engineering Excellence Award program. The project greatly improved the VTA's light rail system by providing increased accessibility for the traveling public. The new system allows for a level entry from the platform to the cars, eliminating having to step up to the train and then negotiate stairs. It also eliminated the old mechanical lifts that had been used for individuals with disabilities. In addition to the safety and accessibility benefits, it also increased efficiency since boarding and exiting is much quicker and the train operators no longer have to exit the train to assist people using the lifts.

Nolte developed five flood control and ecological restoration alternatives for this project. We used specific criteria to evaluate the alternatives which led to identifying the Least Environmentally Damaging Practicable Alternative (LEDPA). The selected alternative removed the Hale Avenue Resource Recovery Facility from the floodplain. It also raised existing levees and widened the channel bottom restoring 12 acres to natural wetlands and riparian habitat. We also removed 110,000 cubic yards of soil while maintaining oak and willow trees. In 2003, the project was awarded the American Public Works Association Outstanding Project of the Year. It also won the Outstanding Civil Engineering Award from the San Diego section of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2002.

2003: Watt Avenue Bridge Project
Awards
Watt Avenue Bridge Project
Watt Avenue carries in excess of 100,000 vehicles per day and had become one of the most highly traveled roadways in Sacramento County. The County retained Nolte to implement a comprehensive community involvement program and to design a solution. The project included road widenings over three bridges, as well as the associated widenings of on- and off-ramps. The purpose of the project was to improve mobility and make the area safer and more aesthetically pleasing for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and area residents. The project added one travel lane in each direction, and provided auxiliary merge lanes (a much needed safety improvement). It improved bicycle/pedestrian facilities and enhanced aesthetics through architectural treatments of the bridge structures, landscaping, and noise barriers. The project has won numerous awards. It was named Project of the Year by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments and was awarded an Excellence in Transportation Award from Caltrans. It won a 'Tranny' award from the California Transportation Foundation and, most recently, was awarded the 2003 Project of the Year by the Sacramento Chapter of the APWA.
